Learn the story behind Bittergreen — the place, the name, and the world that inspires Jessica’s work.
To some, the word Bittergreen may stir up thoughts of an old Gordon Lightfoot song, a bitter plant or a photo of a childhood memory. But to me it means so much more than any of those things.Once upon a time, Bittergreen was our family’s small horse farm in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. As a small child I was blessed with a surplus of freedom to wander and explore that world. It was a world of breaking sunrises on glistening dew that sparkled on tiger lilies. It was the scent of pine down a shady driveway. It was a place of climbing trees and learning to feel safety in their branches and a sense of trees as a living thinking being. It was the sound of horses crunching away at their morning hay while I climbed on their sunlit backs as they sat. Bittergreen was a place of the sun warmly opening up a small child’s imagination.Artists are not born, but they can come from a place of curious observation channeling wonder and interest in the world. I was blessed to be born into a sanctuary where I was allowed the freedom to wander, to explore and discover. That unbridled freedom was what made me into who I am today. Bittergreen is a memory of a place where beauty was found around every corner.I want to create a fellowship of likeminded people interested in coming together under the heading of The Bittergreen Gathering. People who have either collected my art or are interested in embracing the warmth of memory, freedom and curiosity.
